Be afraid. Be very afraid. The swamp is alive with a thousand eyes, all of them watching you. Those memorable opening lines to Jim Stafford’s Swamp Witch apply as you wander through the pitch-black mangrove forest with nothing but your flashlight, your bag of offal, and the suspect confidence that you will actually emerge to tell the story. About 100 meters into the swamp is an estuarine lagoon that serves as an ibis and egret rookery. Caymans and crocodiles patrol the base of the roost to gobble up nestlings that tumble beyond the safety of their nests. From the bank, you can lure the receptive reptiles with your bag of tricks and draw them ever nearer to you to get a good up close look. Caymans abound, and you will see the reds of their eyes sparkling. Crocodiles are less common but frequently observed. Low impact, very spooky and great thrills, great family fun. |
